Le domaine du traitement automatique de la langue naturelle (TALN), aussi appelé linguistique informatique, a connu des changements radicaux au cours des quinze dernières années, les chercheurs et les développeurs ayant graduellement abandonné les approches traditionnelles basées sur des règles symboliques au profit de nouvelles méthodes empiriques fondées sur des corpus. Cette nouvelle approche domine maintenant dans tous les sous-domaines du TALN, y compris la traduction automatique et la traduction assistée par ordinateur.
